Kicking Off the New Year with a Disney Cruise: Our Experience at Sea

We kicked off the New Year with something we hadn’t done before — a Disney cruise — and it ended up being one of the most well-rounded family vacations we’ve taken. From the moment we arrived at the port, it was clear Disney does cruising differently, and in the best way.

Seamless Start & Sailaway Magic

Boarding day was impressively smooth. We dropped our bags, checked in at our assigned time, and within about 10–15 minutes we were onboard. One of those small Disney touches that really sets the tone? As you walk onto the ship, they announce each family’s name to welcome you aboard. It immediately feels personal and special.

During the muster drill, we watched dolphins swimming alongside the ship — an unexpected and perfect start to the trip — and then headed straight to the sailaway party. High energy, great music, and that “vacation has officially started” feeling.

Entertainment, Characters & Thoughtful Details

Over the next few days, we explored the ship, met characters throughout the day (without feeling overwhelmed or overcrowded), and enjoyed Broadway-style shows like Tangled and Twice Charmed, both of which were genuinely impressive.

One thing Disney does exceptionally well is balance. Yes, there are lots of kids — but it never felt chaotic or crowded. There are plenty of adult-only areas, quiet lounges, and spaces to relax if you want downtime. We honestly didn’t even get to explore everything because there was always something happening.

Dining That’s an Experience

Disney’s rotational dining deserves its own spotlight. Each night, you rotate to a different themed dining room, but your wait staff follows you throughout the cruise. That consistency makes a big difference, especially for families. Our waiter went above and beyond — magic tricks, kid-friendly moments, and service that felt personal and attentive.

The standout dinner — and the one that alone makes a Disney cruise worth doing at least once — was Animator’s Palate. Dinner is interactive from start to finish, with drawings on the walls constantly changing, characters from your childhood appearing, and guests trying to guess who’s coming next. Toward the end, it turns into a full show, complete with Mickey himself. It was one of those moments where both kids and adults were equally entertained.

Ports, Culture & Adventure

Our port days added a great mix of adventure and culture. In Cozumel, we did a buggy excursion that took us well beyond the port, ending with a beach stop, lunch, and a piñata for the kids filled with Mexican candy.

Progreso was a long but unforgettable day. We visited Chichén Itzá, one of the Wonders of the World, and followed it with a stop at a cenote that was absolutely beautiful. Standing at such a historic site was humbling and fascinating — a true bucket list experience. Progreso itself doesn’t offer much right at the port (and fun fact: it has the longest cruise pier in the world), so excursions are definitely the way to go there.

Pirate Night & Fireworks at Sea

One of the most fun surprises was Pirate Night. Guests dress up, the ship transforms for the theme, and the night ends with fireworks at sea — something you don’t see on most cruise lines and such a memorable touch.

Final Thoughts

By the end of the cruise, what stood out most was how intentional everything felt. The service, entertainment, dining, and logistics were thoughtfully designed to keep the experience smooth, fun, and memorable without feeling overwhelming.

A Disney cruise isn’t just for die-hard Disney fans or families with young kids — it’s a high-quality cruise experience that happens to be incredibly family-friendly. If you’ve ever considered doing one “just once,” I can confidently say it’s worth it.

If you’re curious about which Disney ship or itinerary might be the best fit for your family, I’m always happy to help you plan it the right way.
