Know Before You Go: Airline Differences Matter
Every airline has its own rules when it comes to baggage allowances, including how many bags you can bring, size limits, and weight restrictions. What’s free on one airline might cost extra on another — especially for checked bags. Beyond baggage, many airlines now charge separately for things like seat selection, priority boarding, snacks, and even carry-on bags on some low-cost carriers. It’s also important to check policies on things often overlooked, such as fees for overweight or oversized luggage, pet travel, and changes or cancellations. To avoid surprises, always review your airline’s specific policies before booking or heading to the airport.
Pro Tip: If you don’t pay to select your seats in advance, the airline will assign them for you—often randomly—so families and groups are not guaranteed to sit together.
Pro Tip: Get TSA PreCheck to breeze through airport security with shorter lines, no need to remove shoes, laptops, or liquids — making your travel experience smoother and less stressful!
Real ID
Starting May 7, 2025, anyone 18 or older flying domestically in the U.S. must present a REAL ID–compliant driver’s license or state ID—or an acceptable alternative like a passport, passport card, or Trusted Traveler credential (Global Entry, military ID, etc.)—at TSA security checkpoints. REAL ID-compliant cards are usually marked with a star in the top corner. If you don’t have one of these, TSA may require additional screening—or you may not be allowed through security. Children under 18 traveling with a companion who has proper ID aren’t required to have a REAL ID. To avoid delays, applying early at your DMV or using a passport as backup is strongly recommended.
